Living in Blackpool

Blackpool is a seaside town with a long promenade, a tram that runs right along it and a park the council counts among the UK's most significant historic parks. If you are thinking of renting one of our homes here, this short guide covers the seafront, getting about and the local services you are likely to need first.
The seafront
The Blackpool Illuminations stretch along six miles of the Promenade, and Visit Blackpool, the council's tourism service, calls them the greatest free light show on Earth. The 2026 season runs from Friday 4 September to Sunday 3 January 2027.
Stanley Park
Stanley Park opened in 1926 and turns 100 on 2 October 2026. Blackpool Council describes it as a Grade II listed park of around 390 acres, with formal gardens, woodland, a lake, the Italian Gardens, a bandstand and the Cocker Clock Tower. The council says it attracts more than two million visitors a year.
Getting around
The tram runs the length of the seafront, from Starr Gate to Fleetwood, calling at Cleveleys on the way. Blackpool Transport says trams run as often as every 10 minutes in the daytime, seven days a week. It runs local bus routes too. The tram calls at North Station, for trains from Blackpool North. National Rail lists Blackpool North as having step-free access to all platforms.
Council services
Blackpool Council looks after bins, council tax and libraries. There are eight libraries in the town, including Central Library.
Blackpool is moving from fortnightly to three-weekly collections for the grey, blue and brown bins, with food waste collected every week, and many households are getting a new collection day. It is well worth checking your bin day on the council's website when you move in. The council asks for bins and food caddies to be out by 7am on collection day.
