Saving energy and money on bills

Small changes add up. The Energy Saving Trust estimates its ten quick tips could save a household in Great Britain up to £313 a year. Here are some of the easiest, with the Trust's estimated yearly saving.

Easy everyday wins

• Line dry clothes instead of using a tumble dryer, about £50. Outside is best when the weather allows (see keeping condensation at bay).
• Keep showers to four minutes, about £45.
• Switch appliances off standby, about £45. Fridges and freezers stay on, of course.
• Wash clothes at 30°C and do one fewer wash a week, about £26.
• Only boil the water you need in the kettle, about £10.

Help with the cost

• Warm Home Discount. A one-off £150 off your electricity bill, reopening in October 2026 for winter 2026 to 2027. You may be eligible if, on 23 August 2026, you or your partner got Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related ESA or Pension Credit, your name (or your partner's) was on the electricity bill and your supplier is in the scheme. It's usually automatic, and prepayment meters can qualify.
• No VAT on household electricity this winter. For supplies from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, VAT on household electricity in Great Britain is cut to zero. You don't need to apply, and Citizens Advice warns that a message asking you to is likely a scam.
• Struggling to pay? Ask your supplier about a payment plan, a payment break or reduction, or its hardship fund. The Citizens Advice consumer helpline can help on 0808 223 1133, and see if money gets tight.

The Priority Services Register

Energy suppliers and network operators keep a register of people who need extra help, such as priority support in an emergency, advance notice of planned power cuts where possible, large print or braille bills, and a password scheme for callers. You can ask to join if, for example, you've reached State Pension age, are pregnant or have young children, live with a disability or long term condition, or your circumstances have recently changed. Ask each supplier, and ask again if you switch. Water companies run free priority schemes too.
